OBJECTS OF EVERYDAY LIFE: ART-CRAFT-DESIGN RELATIONSHIP
AND TRANSFORMATION IN FELT PRODUCTS OF TURKEY

Upcoming Study: The main aim in this project is to find out the connections between craft, art and design by researching felt products. The art, design and craft scenes have interfered with each other in the past, and they are still in relation. Especially in the geography of Turkey, while there is a history and culture of art and craft, there is still a need to explore various daily life objects and how they were produced and used. It can be said that certain objects such as furniture, jewellery and decorative objects from the history have been immersed in our culture and the daily life objects that we use today. Felt-making and felt objects were chosen as felt-making is a traditional art in Turkey and felt products are very common daily life objects.
The article’s point of view is on the art-craft and design relationships, and the changing production processes and the cultural aspects;  which are all recognisable in felt-making. Different product examples are given from the history and their symbolic change has been described. All in all, the researcher found out that felt and felt-making is still very relavant in today’s culture and a part of daily life. The function of felt products has changed, and it even shifted from nomadic to settled lifestyle, and from villages to metropolis. Still, it is still used as an identification and self-expression: This is observed for felt, both in the making process and in the functions of felt products.
Felt is still a part of everyday life and new opportunities can still be found in the intersections of art, design and craft. The changing functions and the change of everyday life objects affect each other: Among traditional nomadic Turkish culture, also known as Yoruk culture, felt used to be a crucial part of the daily life. Yoruks who still sustain this nomadic lifestyle today are using plastics, nylons, fabrics in objects they use daily. Yet, in the city, there are many uses of felt; from decoration to notebook covers, fashion to gift ornaments. Also, people are practicing felt-making at home, creating their own ornaments from wool. Thus, it is still in relation to our daily life with different functions, but numerous ways.
